Many of us spend hours carefully blow-drying, straightening, or curling our hair. But if lockdown gave us anything, it was time to spend learning about our natural hair texture—how it falls, air dries, and basically what happens if we just leave it be. The learning? The easiest way to elevate a good haircut is to embrace what we were born with.
Take Salma Hayek, who stepped out for dinner in London on Wednesday with her natural waves in tow. Looking healthy and glossy, each twirl of hair made her otherwise simple long bob look voluminous and bouncy. Styled in a center parting, the curls looked both polished and beachy— maybe even Hayek is down with the mermaidcore trend.
Whether your hair is straight or naturally wavy, there is always a way to add oomph to your natural texture. When it comes to curls, hairstylist Larry King recommends starting in the shower. “My number one tip is to never towel dry your hair when you get out of the shower—instead, scrunch it with your hands to release any excess water, leaving the hair super damp and wet, then apply product to the hair before drying. It will help to maintain the curl pattern and reduce any frizz.”
If you’re not well endowed in the curl department, aside from a pair of tongs, why not add grit, grip, dimension, and texture with a spray like Living Proof’s Full Dry Volume & Texture Spray? It’s also excellent at heat protection and will leave hair ready for an evening out like Hayek.
