San Francisco man gets five years for possessing gun outside elementary school

SAN FRANCISCO — A San Francisco resident was sentenced to five years in federal prison for possessing a gun outside of an elementary school, a crime for which his attorney says he feels “great remorse for his reckless behavior.”

Brandon Paillet, 40, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The terms of his sentencing include being placed in a facility where he can receive drug addiction treatment. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston handed down the sentence, court records show.

Paillet was arrested in August 2021 outside New Traditions Elementary School on the 2000 block of Grove Street after a 911 caller reported seeing a man “holding his hand like there’s a gun” and punching cars. The caller told dispatchers the man appeared to be suffering from a mental illness, the complaint says.

In 2002, when he was last in federal court, Paillet received a five-year prison term for possessing seven grams of crack cocaine. He was barred from possessing firearms due to felony convictions.

Paillet wrote in court records that he did not remember the incident the same way it is described in court records, but he does not contest the prosecution’s version of events.
