SAN JOSE — A juvenile driver moving at low speed in a parking lot struck and killed a 15-year-old boy early Wednesday in San Jose, police said.

The crash happened at 12:56 a.m. Wednesday, on the residential 2400 block of Rinconada Drive, near Almaden Expressway and Curtner Avenue. Police said a vehicle struck a male pedestrian.

The vehicle, a Subaru sedan, was driven by a female minor who was driving northbound through the entrance to an apartment complex parking lot at a low rate of speed, police said. Authorities did not say in their release if the driver was fully licensed, permitted or driving without a license.

The Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner later confirmed the victim’s identity to be 15-year-old Justin Estira. The San Jose Unified School District confirmed that he was a student at Willow Glen High School.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, according to police. Authorities said they were investigating whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

The traffic-related death was the 20th on San Jose city streets of 2023 and the 12th involving a pedestrian.

Justin was a “bright, funny, kind, well-loved kid” who “brought so much joy to those who knew him,” according to a GoFundMe fundraiser organized by family friend Amy Lehman.

Donations will be used to help pay for services, Lehman said. As of Wednesday night, $11,830 had been raised.
