San Jose: Legendary late-night S.F. bakery, Bob’s Donuts, coming to Santana Row

It’s been voted San Francisco’s best doughnut shop, called the city’s late-night jewel and made all sorts of “best” lists.

Since 1960, residents have known that Bob’s Donuts is the place to go for a sweet something in the wee hours after the nightclub music winds down and the bars close. The shop is open 24/7, with baking going on at all hours.

Now for the first time, the family-owned business is expanding outside San Francisco, with a Mill Valley shop scheduled to open in the next month or so, and a San Jose shop at Santana Row planned for the summer of 2023.

The new shops will blend classic recipes with contemporary retail design. (There’s no exporting the OG look and feel of the 62-year-old Polk Street original.) But the doughnuts that have been top sellers for decades — the apple fritter and the glazed — will be coming out of the North Bay and South Bay fryers, along with old fashioneds, jelly-filled, cinnamon-sprinkled and other favorites.

As for hours, as much as the owners, the Ahn family, would love to operate 24/7 at the new locations, local regulations prohibit them from doing so. At Santana Row, Rebekah Ahn and her siblings are hoping to stay open until 30 minutes after the last watering hole at the center closes. In Mill Valley, Bob’s soft opening hours will be 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., expanding later to a 9 p.m. closing.

Details: Open 24/7 at 1621 Polk St., San Francisco, but shorter hours at the 601 Baker St. location; www.bobsdonutssf.com
