A man was arrested on suspicion of felony assault Wednesday in an attack on a street vendor captured in a viral video outside the SAP Center last month, according to the San Jose Police Department.
In the video, recorded around 11:43 p.m. following a Feb. 16 concert, an attacker quickly strikes the vendor, who is left bloodied on the ground while the suspect flees the scene. The vendor was hospitalized for moderate injuries following the incident, SJPD said.
A 33-year-old suspect was arrested Wednesday in Hayward after investigation yielded an arrest warrant, though police did not say how they had been led to the suspect. The suspect was later released from custody after posting bail, according to authorities.
The attack outside the SAP Center was the first of two similar events in the span of three days. In the other, a man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and attempted carjacking after he allegedly approached a vendor with a baseball bat outside an auto-parts store on Feb. 18, according to San Jose police. A viral video showed a man smashing the food cart with a bat and entering the vendor’s truck.
While SJPD said the two incidents were unrelated, the timing spurred a strong reaction from local politicians. In a news conference last Thursday, San Jose Councilmember Omar Torres called the events an “ongoing attack” on small businesses and food vendors.
