San Leandro Unified School District Trustee Christian Rodriguez died Monday, days after he was elected school board president.
A post Saturday from the San Leandro Unified Superintendent, Mike McLaughlin, said that Rodriguez “was struck by a vehicle” on Friday.
According to preliminary information Oakland police provided Monday night, officers responding to a report of an injury collision at the 4000 block of Edwards Avenue arrived to learn that Rodriguez, who was a front-seat passenger in a vehicle, attempted to get out while it was in motion. Rodriguez struck his head on asphalt, suffering severe head trauma.
A deputy for the Alameda County Sheriff’s coroner’s bureau confirmed Rodriguez’s death Monday.
“As you can only imagine, his tragic, untimely death is enormously devastating for our entire San Leandro community,” McLaughlin said in a statement. “Christian has been an indispensable member of our SLUSD family for many years now and was also a dear, cherished friend to so many of us.”
Rodriguez was first elected to the board in 2018, according to McLaughlin. He was selected by his colleagues to serve as school board president last week.
Rodriguez and his family had lived in San Leandro since 2007. He is survived by his wife and their three children, his mother and extended family members.
The incident remains under investigation, and anyone with information may call Oakland police’s traffic unit at 510-777-8570.
