During the Queen’s reign, the Royal Family traditionally visited her at Sandringham House for the Christmas period. This year the tradition of spending Christmas in Norfolk will continue, with King Charles set to host his first Christmas as monarch.
The last two royal Christmases were disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the royals are expected to be out in full force today (December 25) now restrictions have lifted.
Buckingham Palace recently confirmed in a brief statement: “Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort accompanied by members of the Royal Family will attend the morning service on Christmas Day at Sandringham church, on Sunday, December 25, 2022.”
Every Christmas Day, members of the Royal Family walk to St Mary Magdalene Church, their local place of worship while in residence at Sandringham House.
Well-wishers line the route, and often royal children will be given gifts by members of the public, while royal women receive bouquets of flowers.

Diana often visited St Mary Magdalene Church for Christmas Day with the Royal Family in the 1980s and 1990s.
Diana’s eldest son Prince William honoured his mother’s memory by having his first daughter Princess Charlotte baptised at the same church Diana had been in 2015.
St Mary Magdalene Church has been the setting of several key royal events, including the baptisms of King George VI and Princess Eugenie.
King George VI’s coffin also rested in the church following his death in 1952 until his lying-in-state began at Westminster Abbey.
The Queen spent many of the Christmases of her reign at Sandringham.
She would usually stay until after February 6 to privately mark the anniversary of her father’s death as he died at the residences.
While she spent the anniversary there this year, she spent what would be her final Christmas at Windsor Castle last year as Covid cases spiralled.
This year the royal Christmas will be organised by King Charles and the Queen Consort, and Charles will give his first Christmas speech as monarch.
