The longstanding rumour that a romantic moment between Daphne and Velma was cut from the Scooby-Doo movie has been confirmed by Sarah Michelle Gellar – and we’re so sad we missed out!
The 2002 live-action mystery movie starred Sarah, Freddie Prinze Jr., Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini as Daphne, Fred, Shaggy and Velma as the live-action versions of the cartoon characters, who formed Mystery Incorporated.
Along with Scooby-Doo, they reunited after a two-year disbandment to investigate a mystery at a popular horror-themed tropical island resort.
While there’ve been long-held beliefs that Daphne and Velma may have been more than friends, Buffy star Sarah, 45, has now said that there was actually a ‘steamy’ scene where they kissed that was actually removed from the final edit.
During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Sarah was questioned by fans who had phoned in and asked whether there was a ‘relationship on the side’ between the two characters.
‘I don’t know about a relationship on the side, but there was a steamy – I mean, I said it was steamy, but they probably didn’t think it was, hence it was cut….,’ she said.
Asking to clarify what she meant by Andy, 54, Sarah said that a kiss was filmed.
‘Kiss, yup, it got cut. It was an actual kiss between Daphne and Velma that got cut,’ she explained.
She added: ‘I feel like the world wants to see it, but I don’t know where it is.’
Andy then joked that they could have ‘added about $15mil [£12m] to the box office’ if the scene had stayed.
Speaking about another scene that didn’t make it to screen, Sarah said that there had been a ‘great line’ where Daphne and Fred were fighting and she told him: ‘That ascot makes you look gay.’
She said that while that scene was ‘the reason I signed onto the movie’, it failed to get the approval to stay.
‘I know everyone always thought it for a long time and there was always this implication about Fred being interested in both, you know, parties,’ she said.
‘It was less family friendly to begin with.’
Her comments come after the movie’s writer James Gunn revealed in 2020 that he wanted to make Velma gay in the movie and its 2004 sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, but the studio wouldn’t let him.
‘In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,’ he posted on Twitter at the time.
‘But the studio just kept watering it down and watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) and finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).’
Based on the long-running cartoon series of the same name, James said in 2017 that his screen adaptation was initially rated R, but after it was cut, was downgraded to a PG-rated comedy for all ages.
Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen airs on Bravo TV in the US.
