Singing her praises
Saratoga High School sophomore Diya Iyer has had a productive year as a vocalist. She was selected for the American Choral Director’s Association National Honor Choir, which performed in Cincinnati in February. Iyer was one of 30 sopranos chosen for the choir from an overall pool of more than 4,000 applicants.
She also performed at Carnegie Hall in March and was a finalist in the American Protégé International Vocal Competition, where she sang at the Winner’s Recital. Approximately 70 vocalists were in this year’s competition.
Next up, Iyer is playing Sophie in Saratoga High’s production of “Mamma Mia!” The show, based on the music of ABBA, runs April 28-May 6 at the high school’s McAfee Center, 20300 Herriman Ave.

Artist residency applications
Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose is accepting applications for the second year of its artist-in-residence program through May 22. Artists in the 12-week program will help young visitors draw, paint, sculpt and create in the museum’s LeRoy Neiman Art Studio. The fall residency begins Oct. 7; three more residencies are available in the winter, spring and summer. Each artist will receive a $1,500 monthly stipend.
Artists will be tasked with creating and facilitating monthly hands-on art programs for children of all ages on the weekends. The artists will have the opportunity to display their own artwork and share their style and creative process with Bay Area families. Each artist will receive a portfolio of their museum work in photos and video to take with them after their residency is complete.
