SAS: Who Dares Wins – Jungle Hell is coming to Channel 4 on Monday 23rd January for an eighth series. A new group of recruits face the toughest challenge of their life, in one of the toughest environments faced by Special Forces operatives. Twenty ordinary men and women will enter jungle hell, in Thung Ui, North Vietnam, to attempt to complete the punishing jungle phase of SAS selection.
This condensed version of SAS Selection will be led by an elite team of ex-special forces operators from the UK and US. Taking the lead this year as Chief DS (Directing Staff) is Billy (Mark Billingham MBE). He is an expert in jungle warfare and spent half his decorated military career serving there. Foxy (Jason Fox) and Rudy Reyes from the US also return. Taking up the final spot is new DS Chris Oliver, whose military experience spans over 16 years, serving all over the globe.
This phase of selection is the most gruelling. This year the DS have combined their skills and experience in jungle warfare to create the toughest course yet. The ultimate test of man versus the elements, where everything’s out to kill you. Vietnam is flooded with conflict history and is where the rules of guerrilla warfare were re-written. The conditions can work for or against, push you or break you, but ultimately only the toughest survive.
Meet the Recruits
In episode 1, the 20 recruits are tasked with the challenge of traversing the ‘trainasium’, suspended a dizzying 50 feet above the ground. Recruits must take control of their fears to get across. Fear has no place in the special forces. If you can’t control your fear, you will never make it as an elite soldier. Recruits must prove to the DS they can conquer their greatest fears and not be controlled by them.
Later, they face an early inspection to check they are following guidelines set by the DS. When some are caught out for poor discipline, everyone is made to pay the price. Finally, the recruits are challenged to complete one of the most dangerous infiltration methods used by the SAS – a waterfall abseil. With a powerful 215-foot drop to navigate, one of the recruits becomes dangerously enveloped by the force of the water.
