Savoring Reggie Jackson’s audacious dunk

Reggie Jackson dunks are something of a delicacy, an event to savor.

“I dunk in game-changing moments, hopefully, try to save my legs being at 31,” Jackson said after Tuesday’s slow-motion thriller at Crypto.com Arena, when his late-game slam on Nikola Jokic was the proverbial cherry on top of a personal 9-0 run that helped the Clippers polish off their 25-point comeback victory over Denver.

The dunk was just No. 3 this season for the 6-foot-2 guard, and immediately is in contention, Jackson said, for No. 1 in his career.

“I don’t know if it’s my favorite ever, but it’s definitely up there,” Jackson said. “Especially I can say with the moment, everything kind of came together at once so, when that happened, yeah, I could feel my teammates even more confident. So, yeah, it’s up there. When I look back at it, it’s gonna be up there.

“And I’m not gonna lie, he is … the reigning MVP. Feels a lot better to get a big play, a big dunk and then find a way to get the win. I don’t want to say it’s No. 1, but when I look back on it, it might be. I just don’t want to put that out there yet.”

As special as Jackson’s slam was, it came in No. 2 on the NBA’s nightly Top 10 countdown (“knocking it right out of the park”) behind Brandon Ingram’s game-winning 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds left that gave New Orleans – the Clippers’ opponent Thursday – a 128-125 victory over Minnesota.

What’s more, Jackson’s juicy jam might even have been surpassed – judging by fans’ enthusiastic reaction on Twitter – by Brian Sieman’s call on Bally Sports SoCal describing Jackson’s audacity in the moment.

“Oh my goodness! With the guts of a daylight burglar!” exclaimed the play-by-play announcer known for his seemingly bottomless Amir Coffey-inspired puns, such as Tuesday’s “the Brim Reaper!” and “Supreme caffeine!”

Twitter might be predisposed to hyperbole, but @cactusenvy proclaimed that Sieman’s description of Jackson’s dunk “may be the greatest call of all time.

He was joined Thursday on the call by Cuttino Mobley, the former Clipper who was filling in for Sieman’s regularly rotating partners, Jim Jackson and Mike Fratello. Kristina Pink joined Sieman on the call for Saturday’s loss to Memphis in Los Angeles, becoming the first woman to handle game-calling duties for a local broadcast of a Clippers game.

She got plaudits afterward from Hall of Fame broadcaster Ralph Lawler, who retired in 2019 after 40 seasons as the Clippers’ play-by-play man.

“@Kristina_Pink is a special talent,” Lawler tweeted. “She almost had a shot in my final season when Corey Maggette was suddenly unavailable for a road game in Minnesota. FSW decided though to have pre-game host Mike Hill work with me. I would love to have worked a game w/Kristina.”

ALL-STAR VOTING

Clippers star Paul George slipped one spot to No. 4 among forwards in All-Star fan voting in the league’s second update, with a tally of 1,773,447 votes – 56,286 behind Golden State’s Andrew Wiggins.

LeBron James leads Western Conference frontcourt vote-getters, with 4,386,392, and Jokic is second (3,016,380). The Warriors’ Steph Curry leads Western Conference guards and Brooklyn’s Kevin Durant is the Eastern Conference’s frontcourt leader while Chicago’s DeMar DeRozan is tops among backcourt players.

All-Star voting ends at 9 p.m. on Jan. 22. Fan ballots – cast either on NBA.com or by tweeting #NBAAllStar and a hashtag followed by the first and last name of the player – will account for 50% of the vote to determine the starters for the 2022 NBA All-Star Game. Current NBA players and a media panel will account for 25% each and head coaches will choose the game’s reserves.

A seven-time All-Star, George has missed 11 games since the Clippers reported on Christmas that he’d suffered an ulnar collateral ligament tear in his right elbow and would be out indefinitely. But in 27 games this season, he’s the team’s leader in points (24.7), assists (5.5) and steals (2.0), and his 7.1 rebounds per game rank second on the team.
