‘Scandi hairline’ colour is everywhere on TikTok, and it will make your blonde seriously pop

If you think your summer blonde isn’t bright enough (and remember, Barbie blonde is 2023’s hottest hair shade), you might want to ask your hairdresser about the ‘Scandi hairline’ technique. The low-key colour method is currently sweeping the internet, offering a new take on a face frame.

While ‘money piece’ face-framing highlights usually focus on the two front sections of hair on the top of the head, the Scandi hairline sees the colour applied to the baby hairs all around the face, giving an instantly brightened look (but ultra natural, like the Scandinavian girlies).

As one viral TikTok video states, the Scandi hairline is “for the blonde who can never be blonde enough.”

If that sounds like you, here’s everything you need to know about the Scandi hairline technique, and how to achieve the look with your own hairdresser.

What is the Scandi hairline technique?

John Frieda’s UK creative stylist Michael Gray tells GLAMOUR: “The Scandinavian hairline – also known as the ‘Scandi Hairline’ – is a colour technique that mimics where the sun hits certain parts of the forehead. Not only is this trend a low cost option to make your blonde pop, but it’s also a great way to limit the damaging effects of bleach as only the baby hairs are coloured. This technique thereby gives a brighter and lighter looking ‘halo’ effect to the rest of your hair with minimal effort needed.”

How is the Scandi hairline achieved?

“Colourists will take a small section of the hair along the hair line, better known as your baby hairs, and bleach them with a freehand lightener. This method is quick, effortless and gives a brighter appearance, whilst still achieving a natural and seamless look,” says Michael.

Be sure to have a thorough conversation with your hairdresser if you’re considering the Scandi hairline look – and remember that results will vary based on the individual’s own hair colour.

Is the Scandi hairline easy to maintain?

The Scandi hairline look will grow out naturally just like any hair colour, so of course you will only be able to maintain that super bright hairline for a certain amount of time – though to keep your results fresh for longer, you can reach for colour-protecting and toning products.

“If you want to stretch out as much time as possible between appointments and make sure your colour remains without the dreaded underlying brassy tone, then at-home maintenance is key,” says Michael. “I always tell my clients to use a colour-depositing shampoo and colour-depositing conditioner at home in order to extend the life of their hair colour.” He recommends the John Frieda Violet Crush Shampoo, RRP £7.99 and John Frieda Violet Crush Conditioner, RRP £6.99.
