Scenery beats screenery at idyllic Rosneath Castle Caravan park

IF you’re looking for a break that provides both peace and plenty to do all while enjoying beautiful scenery then Rosneath Castle Park is definitely the place to be.

Sitting on the edge of Gare Loch, this picturesque site is surrounded by outstanding countryside.

The scenic journey from Glasgow took us a little over an hour — just as well as my son Nicholas, eight, was so excited for his Easter staycation he kept asking: “Are we there yet?”

With check-in at 4pm, we had time to appreciate the stunning views of the loch and Arrochar’s Cobbler Hill before unpacking in our luxurious Gareloch caravan.

It was very spacious with two bedrooms, one with en-suite, a living and dining area plus a fully equipped kitchen.

Back home, life is so busy with work, school, clubs and play-dates and we are constantly on the go. So relaxing and enjoying ourselves was exactly what we were after.

The next morning I met with park owners Richard and Sarah — his family have run the park since 1954 — who do their utmost to ensure visitors enjoy their break as much as possible. If you’re happy then they’re very happy.

While the on-site accommodations are static Richard’s newest venture (due next year) is an area of the park with pitching points for 21 touring caravans and campervans, broadening the scope for more people to enjoy this wonderful space.

With a sailing club opening in the summer, they also hope to have on-site kayak, paddleboarding and boating activities to cater for the little ones.

Nicholas had a brilliant time in the park’s Fun Zone club where an amazing list of activities run from 12pm–3pm at the weekends and through the week in school holidays.

Their ‘Silly Science’ event was by far the favourite with kids making their own slime and sherbet while enjoying creating a huge mess, as kids do! The piece-de-resistance was exploding a bottle of Coca-Cola.

Next to this is a huge play park for children of all ages, where Nicholas made lots of friends. This gave me some time to explore the pebbled beach and visit the on-site shop that has an indoor soft play next door.

Before long we’d worked up an appetite so we headed to the on-site Castle Isle bar and restaurant which serves up delicious food and amazing service.

I had haggis bon-bons to start and would highly recommend their Chicken Argyll – a grilled supreme of chicken topped with haggis coated in yummy pepper sauce.

Four nights for a family of six costs from £359 arriving May 23 and a week arriving June 11 is from £549. All accommodations are pet friendly. See rosneathcastle.co.uk or call 01436 831208

Nicholas had mozzarella melts and pepperoni pizza and he was able to take some away — boxed for later — to give him room for dessert.
Rosneath’s on-site entertainment is great fun, with movie nights, live music and a monthly tribute act.

Queen fans take note; next month they are hosting a Freddie Mercury tribute act. They also run karaoke, bingo and Mr & Mrs game nights.

However, if this is not for you and you’d rather enjoy some peace and quiet, then watching the sunset over the hills and loch from the beach or your caravan is truly spectacular.

All too soon we were sadly waving goodbye to this fabulous park, stopping off on the way home at Loch Lomond Shores to visit the Sea Life Aquarium and enjoy an ice-cream.

Nicholas did not ask for screen time once during our stay — hard to believe, I know — and between that little miracle and my being able to fully unwind, we are already planning a return visit to see this beautiful park in its (hopefully) sunny glory during the summer months.
