Paul Scholes has criticised Christian Eriksen for his ‘upbeat’ post-match interview for Manchester United.
The Danish midfielder was part of Erik ten Hag’s side that fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Sevilla on Thursday night, a result that saw them crash out of the Europa League with the score 5-2 on aggregate.
While defeats happen in football, it was the nature of the loss that was most disappointing with a lack of fight and several individual errors proving costly.
As part of the post-match coverage, BT Sport conducted an interview with midfielder Eriksen, who explained that it simply wasn’t United’s day.
He said: “A lot of things happened. We didn’t really get in the game from the first minute. We tried but today we gave them a lot of opportunities to finish us off.
“I think that we lost a bit of our coolness in the build-up with their high pressing, we didn’t really do well with that.
“We made more mistakes than we normally do and personally or not, I think that the whole team couldn’t catch up on the mistakes that teammates made.”
Adding to his point that Man United weren’t good enough, Eriksen said: “It’s football. Sometimes you have good days and sometimes you have bad days and today was one of the bad days which we did everything we could to try and avoid but sometimes it doesn’t.
“Luckily we have a game in four days to get revenge.”
But Eriksen’s comments didn’t exactly go down well with Scholes as the Man United legend took exception to his demeanour during the interview.
Scholes said: “He looks quite upbeat there, Christian [Eriksen]. I have no idea why.”
