Scream Legacy Cast Members Return in New Character Posters

Ahead of the premiere of the fifth Scream movie in January, a trio of character posters have been released featuring the legacy cast members. Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette have all three consistently starred in every movie in the series since the original was released in 1996. Each has been given their own character poster for Scream, with the “It’s always someone you know” tagline teasing that perhaps one of them could be behind the mask this time around.

The official synopsis for Scream reads: “Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past. Neve Campbell (“Sidney Prescott”), Courteney Cox (“Gale Weathers”) and David Arquette (“Dewey Riley”) return to their iconic roles in Scream alongside Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar.”

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed Scream using a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Original Scream writer Kevin Williamson was on board as executive producer alongside Chad Villella, Gary Barber, Peter Oillataguerre, Ron Lynch, Cathy Konrad, and Marianne Maddalena. William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein produced.

What separates Scream from other slasher movie franchises is that the identity of the killer(s) changes with every installment. This means that every time a new killing spree breaks out, there’s an all-new set of suspects with any one of them potentially involved in the murders. With new filmmakers at the helm, could we see some big changes in this new Scream? The character posters tease that one of the returning legacy characters might be Ghostface, which would certainly be a shock to longtime fans. One, two, or all three could also potentially get killed by Ghostface this time as well, as nobody is safe in the series. That this is partly a reboot would seemingly make these classic characters more “expendable” if they’re trying to push the new cast taking over the franchise.

“It was great. I mean, it’s hard without Wes,” David Arquette told Entertainment Tonight, stating that Craven’s presence was still felt on the set. “That was at the forefront. But I did feel his energy there, and certain moments and certain scenes. You just feel the wind blow and you’re like, ‘I don’t know, maybe I’m like a little bit of a hippy at heart, but I felt his energy there.’ It just brought up a lot of memories of Wes, too.”

There have also been some rumblings of a sequel to this new Scream if it does well enough with fans. As was the case with the Halloween legacy sequel revitalizing that franchise, the plan is for Scream to do the same next month. To that end, Arquette added, “They have a brilliant new cast that I think people already love, who are gonna love even more in this franchise.”

Scream will be released in movie theaters on Jan. 14, 2022.
