Sean Dyche conceded he sysmpathised with Thomas Tuchel after he branded Burnley ‘lucky’ after they escaped Stamford Bridge with a point on Saturday following a 1-1 draw.

The Premier League pacesetters dominated from start to finish but had only Kai Havertz’s 33rd minute goal to show for their superiority.

England international Nick Pope enjoyed an inspired afternoon in the visitors’ goal and his efforts were rewarded when, with 11 minutes remaining, Matej Vydra pounced to score an unlikely equaliser.

‘Of course I’m disappointed,’ said Tuchel afterwards. ‘If we played this game 100 times, we’d win 99 times. Today we didn’t win it. The second goal would have decided it. It’s always possible you miss one ball, one cross, and this can happen.

‘It’s our fault. We should have scored. We created so many chances.

‘You have the opponent where you want to have them. You create so many chances. We let them believe it was possible to steal a point by pure luck and that’s what happened.

‘This is not the first game like this and won’t be the last. I was impressed by the performance, the attitude, the quality. It’s football, it was against us today.’

Responding to Tuchel’s ‘lucky’ jibe, Dyche said: ‘ (We) were very lucky but it’s football. Were we lucky to escape with a clean sheet against Brentford? Yes, of course.

‘So that’s why everyone loves the game because it’s possible to win matches like this. I stick with my feelings on the sidelines, I have proved from the data we have now that we had a fantastic match. I liked the attitude and concentration levels.

‘We come from seven games in a row, from Champions League, and play a team like Burnley we needed to put a lot in to control the match.

‘It was a fanastic effort so I am super happy. It just happens in football like this sometimes. We were lucky at Brentford to come away with a clean sheet. They were lucky today.’
