As Australia gains an additional 1 million people to its population since 2019, one West Australian area made the top 10 list as a fastest growing region nationally.
Growing by 46,000 people on average per year, WA continued to show an increase in population between 2019 and 2022.
In the three-year data analysis by KPMG, WA region, Swan, saw the ninth biggest change in population nationally, with a 15,600 increase since 2019.
In Perth’s eastern metropolitan region, the area saw an increase of 3.4 per cent annually between 2019 to 2022, with a total of 161,000 residents calling it home by December.
Wanneroo and Armadale both followed Swan as some of WA’s fastest-growing regions, marking an 11,700 and 9,900 increase respectively.
KPMG demographics expert Terry Rawnsley said multiple WA suburbs have seen “strong growth” as the State saw a total growth of 114,000 people over the three-year period.
Perth suburbs with the biggest population increase
- Swan, 15,600 increase, total population 161,000.
- Wanneroo, 11,700 increase, total population 221,900.
- Armadale, 9900 increase, total population 101,800.
- Cockburn, 9200 increase, total population 123,600.
- Stirling, 8400 increase, total population 220,500.
- Rockingham, 6800, total population 144,000.
- Mandurah, 6200, total population 113,300.
- Gosnells, 5400, total population 134,400.
- Kwinana, 4600, total population 49,500.
South West locations Margaret River, Busselton and Augusta marked a population growth of 2.6 per cent, making for a 60,700 population total.
“Coastal locations such as Mandurah, Rockingham and Augusta — Margaret River — Busselton have experienced ongoing growth as people continue to move to lifestyle locations,” said Mr Rawnsley.
Queensland leads the country with an annual population growth rate of 2.1 per cent, followed by Victoria at 1.9 per cent and Western Australia in third at 1.7 per cent.
According to KPMG’s analytics, Australia’s population increased annually by 440,000 between 2019 and 2022.
KPMG’s data comes as Australia is predicted to hit almost 30 million people in a decade’s time.
In a recent announcement, the Government’s Centre for Population detailed the pandemic and wipeout of migration from two years of closed borders significantly impacted Australia’s population growth.
