Selena Gomez has us sold on the ‘soft pinch’ makeup trend for spring

With spring arriving, we’re definitely in the mood to mix up our makeup. And right on cue, Selena Gomez has entered the chat with a “soft pinch” makeup trend that leans straight into a pretty spring aesthetic.

We plan on peeling back the layers in our wardrobe (see ya, chunky knit) and the same goes for our face, which is why we’re very much here for the new Rare Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil, which offers lips a fresh, juicy wash of colour.

Like its prequel, the Soft Pinch Liquid Blush, both products are made for a more minimal, natural look, with the soft pinch makeup trend calling for a gentle hint of colour, blended seamlessly into cheeks, lips or eyes, rather than a hit of anything too statement.

When Selena launched her soft pinch blush (which was part of the OG Rare Beauty line-up that launched in September 2020), she explained: “there’s nothing like a soft hint of blush to add dimension and colour to your look.” And in a YouTube video chatting through how she uses it, Selena revealed she favours a light approach, dotting a single speck of the product onto the apples of her cheeks before blending, then building if she needs to, to create a gentle pinched-cheeks look.

Now she’s followed up with the same mood for lips. The semi-sheer jelly oil offers a splash of colour to lips that look just-bitten, or just-pinched to bring a hint of tint to the surface before, being bathed in a sheeny oil. 

“I am beyond excited we now have a lip oil. This is our new Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil. It’s definitely not like your traditional lip oil,” Selena explained while introducing her latest launch on her social channels. “It feels like jelly but then it transforms into a lightweight oil and leaves a beautiful tint and shine without feeling sticky.”

“I am obsessed with the way it feels and how you literally only need one swipe,” she continued before highlighting “it comes in eight shades and the cute little top matches our Soft Pinch Liquid Blush.” 

In the press release she also bigged-up the fact that “one swipe” can make “lips look so full and smooth,” adding, “I love how easily you can build up the colour without it getting sticky.”

Lip oils in general have been taking off on TikTok with Dior’s £32 lip oil leading the charge and we’ve seen some of our favourite brands join the conversation. NYX recently released its Fat Oil (£7.49), Merit is about to add the Shade Slick Gelées to its squad and we’re pumped to see Selena give us a rendition all of her own.
