Selena Gomez is wearing her bangs exactly like I wore mine in 1992

Selena Gomez came into this world in 1992, so she was too young to personally experience the sky-high bangs that were ubiquitous in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Those of us who did (it’s me, hi) are more than happy to leave them in the past, but perhaps Gen Z-ers and younger Millennials see a certain retro charm in the look, because it appears Selena is bringing it back.

On Thursday, 15 June, Sephora India posted a video of Selena Gomez announcing Rare Beauty’s availability in-store at the beauty boutique’s India locations. In the clip, the actor and beauty-brand entrepreneur is looking radiant, with glowing skin and a lip gloss that perfectly complements her pink blouse.

But the stand-out beauty moment is her hair. While it’s not unusual for Selena to occasionally straighten her hair into a poker, shiny style, these bangs are unprecedented. Not just side-swept, these bangs have the telltale lift, height, and lack of movement of bangs in the early ’90s — namely when the extra-big, permed hair-metal vibe was starting to lose its popularity, but there was still a lingering love for vertical volume and plenty of hairspray.

It’s definitely a subtler take on the often visibly rock-hard look of 30-ish years ago — one that I can actually get down with (unlike an exact replica of 12-year-old Me’s school photo, which I will not be sharing with you at this time). I won’t be surprised if this marks the moment Selena sparked a trend reboot.
