Serena Williams shared an adorable photo with Meghan Markle and her daughter Olympia

Serena Williams appeared on the debut episode of Meghan Markle’s podcast, Archetypes, which dropped on Spotify on Tuesday, August 23. But apparently the tennis legend didn’t visit the recording studio alone—Williams blessed us with a sweet photo of herself with Olympia, her four-year-old daughter, and Markle on her Instagram grid. 

“I loved talking about so many important topics with my dear friend Meghan as her first guest on #archetypes for @spotify!” Williams wrote in the caption. “It’s out now and worth the listen, especially if you’re ambitious ❤️.” In the photo Williams is wearing a Nike Air tank paired with Nike leggings, with her hair in a high ponytail. Olympia is wearing her hair in little buns on the top of her head. Markle is wearing her dark hair down in soft curls, with a denim dress and a jacket draped over her shoulders. 

In the episode Williams and Markle discussed ambition, specifically the double standard our society holds for ambitious, successful women. 

“This feminist ideology trickled down into nearly every aspect of my education,” Markle said about her schooling at Immaculate Heart, an all-girls Catholic school in Los Angeles. “It’s probably safe to say into every aspect of my life, this message to me and my classmates was clear: Our futures as young women were limitless. Ambition? That was the whole point! So I don’t remember ever personally feeling the negative connotation behind the word ambitious until I started dating my now husband.” (FWIW, my Catholic school education was quite the opposite of this.)

Markle explained how she’s been treated in the press since she’s been with her husband, Prince Harry. “Apparently ambition is a terrible, terrible thing, for a woman that is—according to some. So, since I’ve felt the negativity behind it, it’s really hard to unfeel it. I can’t unsee it, either, in the millions of girls and women who make themselves smaller—so much smaller—on a regular basis.”

As a female athlete in the spotlight, Serena Williams could relate to Markle: “Often women are definitely put in these different boxes when we are ambitious or when we do have goals or when we reach our goals, it’s a negative connotation on how we reach the goals,” she said.
