The very mention of Sanjay Leela Bhansali makes us visualize those vibrant and huge sets from his films, right from his earlier works like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam to his last release Gangubai Kathiawadi. Keeping up with this tradition, the sets of the filmmaker’s upcoming web-series Heeramandi is spread across a humongous are of 1,60,000 square feet, as per an update shared by the makers.

Throwing more light on the making of the show, a statement from the makers said, “While details are under wraps, not surprising since Bhansali has always chosen to work privately and passionately until he is ready to present it to the world, a source reveals that a massive set of close to 1,60,000 sq. ft has been constructed for the series. The director is personally looking into its minutest details. From the actor’s looks, the intricacies on set, to the art design, the lighting with every scene hoping to capture a different visual vignette.”
Heeramandi has an ensemble cast of Sonakshi Sinha, Manisha Koirala, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, among others. The show will be streamed on Netflix this year. The story is based in the pre-partition era.
Earlier this year during the poster launch of Heeramandi, Bhansali spoke with Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos on the need to be careful while making a historical in a country like India. He said, “When you’re making a historical in our country, you need to be careful. So yes, you need to get your facts right. And that is where my research ends because most of it is imagination. Most of it is how I see the period. It’s done but it’s not done so detailed because I find research very boring. I, as a filmmaker, am not set out to make a documentary that I want it to be exact.”
