BMW is continuing with its myriad of all-electric offerings whose model names begin with the letter i . To date, we’ve seen crossover-style machines and small sedans, the latter represented by the i4 and its nearly 500 kilometres of range in certain configurations.
Now, it has released shadowy camouflaged images of an upcoming large EV sedan, set to be called the i7, undergoing cold-weather testing in Sweden.
Despite the camo, we’re confident in stating the new i7 will be every inch a BMW, complete with large twin-kidney grilles up front to pair with its large-and-in-charge body dimensions.
Fortunately, the bucktooth fascia seems to not have migrated here, not has the alarming schnoz of the Concept XM we wrote about earlier this week. EV-specific details are difficult to discern other than the charging port which crops up on the passenger side rear fender area.

Mum’s the word on powertrain specifics, though BMW did say the i7’s electric drive, high-voltage battery, power electronics, and charging technology all originate from the fifth-generation of BMW eDrive technology deployed in the iX crossover.
An interesting tidbit buried in the official bumf was the declaration that the new BMW i7 is “based on the same vehicle concept as all further model variants of the BMW 7 Series”.

BMW and EV drivers more likely to display psychopathic traits: ‘study’
This suggests the company will be stuffing electric gubbins into the same basic platform as variants powered by traditionally-fuelled powertrains instead of basing the vehicle on a modular ‘skateboard’. There’s nothing wrong with this approach, it’s simply different than the tack being taken at some other OEMs.
Located just a few kilometres from the Arctic Circle, the BMW Group winter test centre in Arjeplog is generally used for fine tuning all-wheel-drive systems and the like. Given the general disdain an EV battery shows to cold weather conditions, it has turned into an ideal spot for the company to put its all-electric powertrains through an icy wringer.
