Cricket legends Shane Warne and Sachin Tendulkar have praised Australia after they won their first T20 World Cup with an emphatic eight-wicket victory over New Zealand.

Australia, featuring in their second T20 World Cup final, outplayed debutants New Zealand in Dubai on Sunday.

Pace bowler Josh Hazlewood (3-16) and spinner Adam Zampa (1-26) impressed for Australia but Kane Williamson’s superb 85 from 48 balls gave his side hope, setting 173 to win.

The impressive Trent Boult aside, New Zealand’s bowlers struggled to contain Australia and Mitchell Marsh (77 not out from 50 balls) and David Warner (53 from 38) took Justin Langer’s side to victory with seven balls to spare.

‘Congratulations to both teams on a terrific T20 World Cup final and tournament,’ Australia legend Warne tweeted.

‘In the end the Aussies peaked at the right time and just had to many match winners for New Zealand.

‘Congrats to Aaron Finch and all the Aussie boys! Very happy for Mitch Marsh too, great stuff.’

India hero Tendulkar, meanwhile, said: ‘Kane Williamson played a special innings to set up the final perfectly.

‘However, the partnership between Marsh and Warner sealed the game for the Aussies. The way Marsh began his innings from ball one took New Zealand completely by surprise. Congratulations Australia on winning the T20 World Cup.’

Marsh, who was named Player of the Match in the T20 World Cup final, said: ‘What an amazing six weeks with this group of men. I love them to death and now we’re world champs.

‘I just love playing for this team. I just wanted to get out there and have a presence. I can’t believe it. It’s unbelievable.’

Carlos Brathwaite, who smashed four sixes to fire West Indies to World Cup glory in 2016, added: ‘The brave team won and the team that were a bit tepid came second.’
