With the eighth iteration of Capital One’s “The Match” set to tee-off next month, Patrick Mahomes joined the “Inside the NBA” crew last week to talk about the event.
In doing so, he may have gotten himself into another kind of match vs. Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal.
After the Chiefs QB mentioned that he’d been working on his jump shot as he continues to recover from last postseason’s ankle injury, Shaq saw it as an opportunity.
“I see what you did. You told us about your jump shot,” Shaq said, via The Kansas City Star. “So that means you and Travis [Kelce] are challenging me and Kenny [Smith], Aug. 19. The match, anytime anyplace.”
That set off a hilarious back-and-forth that you’ll only get from the NBA on TNT crew:
“Free throws only,” Mahomes replied.
“Nope, 2-on-2 only,” O’Neal shot back. “Why not? You’re working on your jump shot.”
“You’re not moving very well, so I might have a chance,” the QB joked. Before Shaq admitted, “Actually, I did get a new hip.”
Colleague Charles Barkley then cut-in that the match would actually be 2 1/2-on-2. Commenting, “You. You’re the one and a half, big fella,” when Shaq asked who the 1/2 was.
“I know you’re fat ass didn’t just call me one-and-a-half,” O’Neal said, before turning his attention back to Mahomes. “Don’t be scared of that 2-on-2.”
“The Match” gets underway June 29 as Mahomes and Travis Kelce take on the Splash brothers Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.
