These days, Shaquille O’Neal is best known for his appearances in television commercials and his comedic timing on TNT’s NBA broadcasts.
Back in his playing days, O’Neal was better known for playing for several different NBA teams. One of those teams was the Phoenix Suns, who traded for him back in 2008.
The Suns set up an apartment for O’Neal upon his arrival in Phoenix, but it didn’t come with any furniture or amenities.
O’Neal had no possessions in Phoenix, so he did what anyone looking to furnish an apartment would do: he took a trip to Walmart.
Shaq says that he went to Walmart at around two or three in the morning and made the biggest purchase in the store’s history.
“$70,000,” he said on The Late Late Show with James Corden. “I’m the type of guy, I have no patience.”
O’Neal says he spent the money on everything he thought he would need to furnish a brand-new apartment.
“Two or three in the morning, I gotta go get four or five TVs, I gotta go get printers, I gotta go get laptops. I gotta go get sheets, towels, underwear, t-shirts,” he said.
O’Neal then says his card declined, and he attempted to go through with the transaction again before getting a call from American Express.
He says that the bank told him they suspected fraud, to which he replied that he was in fact the one making the purchase.
The transaction eventually went through, and now O’Neal – in addition to the NBA record books – holds the record for the biggest purchase in Walmart history.
