Sharks’ game at Anaheim postponed as NHL extends COVID-19-related pause

The Sharks’ scheduled game with the Anaheim Ducks at the Honda Center on Monday will have to be played at a later date — along with the 13 other games that were supposed to be played that day.

The NHL on Friday announced it will now not resume play prior to Dec. 28, one day later than originally planned. This, the NHL said, will allow it “an adequate opportunity to analyze league-wide testing results and to assess Clubs’ readiness to play.”

The NHL started its annual holiday break early on Wednesday, two days earlier than originally scheduled, as cases of COVID-19 spiked throughout the league. Friday’s decision increases the total of postponed games to 64 this season.

The Sharks, and other teams, are still scheduled to have their first practice back after the Christmas break on Sunday. According to the Associated Press, players and coaches won’t be allowed to skate until they’ve been cleared following a round of COVID-19 tests.

The Sharks’ first game back is now scheduled for Tuesday at home against the Arizona Coyotes.

It is expected that the NHL will provide an update on its return to play plans by the end of Sunday.

A makeup date for the Sharks-Ducks game has not been announced.
