Shaun Murphy has made his predictions for this season’s Triple Crown winners and they might not be quite who you would expect.
The Magician got his season underway in perfect fashion by winning the opening event of the campaign on Friday at the Championship League.
The 40-year-old continued his fine end to the 2022/23 season which saw him win the Players and Tour Championships after reaching the Welsh Open final.
Such has been his return to peak form that he is predicting another huge win for himself in the months to come, but he is backing a couple of dark horses for the other two major titles in the game.
Speaking on his onefourseven podcast as he made predictions for the season to come, Murphy said: ‘This will be the season that Kyren Wilson wins a Triple Crown event.
‘I think his game is becoming so strong in all areas. I know he and his team work on peaking for those big events and I think this is going to be the year that he does it, I think he’ll win one of the Triple Crown events this season.’
Getting specific on who will win which major title this season, Murphy backed Wilson to claim the Masters, made something of an outside pick for the UK Championship and tipped himself for the big one at the Crucible.
‘I think Kyren’s going to win the Masters. Make a note! Kyren Wilson to win the Masters,’ he said.
‘I’ve got Stuart Bingham to complete his Triple Crown set and win the UK Championship, and I’m going to win the World Championship.’
A former World Championship and Masters winner, Bingham would not be a shock winner of the UK Championship, but he hasn’t won a ranking title since the 2019 Gibraltar Open and has slipped to number 21 in the world, so he would not be going into the first Triple Crown event of the season as one of the favourites.
Wilson has been to the final of the Masters and World Championship without picking up a Triple Crown title just yet, while Murphy himself has won all three majors and is looking to pick up the biggest prizes in the sport for a second time.
The Magician’s treble of tips come in at over 6,000/1 with the bookmakers so it really would be a magic trick if they come off.
