Convenience store chain Sheetz is offering customers a patriotic discount at the gas pump for the Fourth of July.

The Pennsylvania-based company is selling gas for $1.776 per gallon at its more than 600 stores on Tuesday – an approximately 50% markdown from the national average.

The promotion applies all day for regular, E85 (flex fuel), Unleaded 88, mid-grade and premium fuel grades, according to a release.

“We hope this discount helps our customers keep a little more change in their wallets as they travel to celebrate the 4th of July with friends and family, with an obvious nod to our nation’s birthday,” CEO Travis Sheetz said in a statement.

Sheetz has stores in its home state of Pennsylvania as well as Maryland, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

The chain has a history of holiday-themed gas promotions, previously selling gas for $1.99 per gallon rate for Thanksgiving last November.

The one-day price is a substantial discount compared to the national average, which hit approximately $3.53 per gallon on Tuesday, according to AAA data. Last year, prices were hovering above $4.80 per gallon.

A record 43.2 million Americans were expected to travel by car for the Fourth of July holiday.

“Gas prices are $1.30 per gallon less this year than last, but they are still high compared to historical averages,” AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said in a statement.

“The previous record average high price for gas on July Fourth was $4.10 in 2008, while the low was $1.39 in 2001,” Gross added. “Yet despite currently elevated prices, drivers are not cutting back on travel this summer.”
