Premier League clubs have been alerted to Nasser Al-Khelaifi playing a ‘significant role’ in talks with the Glazers in regards to the Manchester United takeover. The Paris Saint-Germain chief has spoken with Sheikh Jassim about his bid previously, but was also consulted by the current Red Devils bosses in hope of the Qatari encouraging his fellow countryman to increase his bid.
The United takeover is an ongoing issue at Old Trafford, with problems concerning the matter filtering its way down to the first-team – with Erik ten Hag largely in the dark about the business he can conduct this summer and his budgets.
The Glazers have narrowed down their options, with the help of the Raine Group, to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim – though there are concerns regarding the latter’s desperate attempt to acquire United.
The concerns about the Qatari royal are due to other Premier League clubs being ‘fearful’ that he will be the ‘face of the state’ if his takeover bid is successful, says The Athletic. The role of Al-Khelaifi in negotiations has also raised eyebrows due to his involvement suggesting that there is the wider interest of Qatar at stake.
Clubs are expected to call for the Premier League to investigate Sheikh Jassim’s source of funds if the Glazers decide that they will shake hands on a deal with the royal, fearful that one of England’s biggest clubs potentially claimed by state ownership.
Al-Khelaifi, and his camp, have insisted that he has only acted in an advisory role for Sheikh Jassim and the Glazers. All parties are said to be aware of the growing concerns from elsewhere too, prompting speculation that Ratcliffe’s bid may now be prepared so that the takeover is not overshadowed by controversy.
