Sunrise co-host Natalie Barr has revealed how she really feels about Meghan Markle in an uncharacteristic on-air rant.
Speaking on the popular Seven breakfast show, the Bunbury-raised TV personality berated the Duchess of Sussex for her interview with The Cut magazine in which she compares herself to Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison for opposing South Africa’s apartheid and went on to become the first democratically elected president of the country in 1994.
In the interview, the 41-year-old claimed a Lion King cast member told her South Africans “danced in the street” on her wedding day just like when “Mandela was freed from prison”.
“He looked at me, and he’s just like light. He said, “I just need you to know: When you married into this family, we rejoiced in the streets the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison,” she said.
Barr responded to the claims by calling Markle a “tosser”.
“I couldn’t even stomach getting through the whole article,” Barr said.
“I think in Australia we’d say she’s just full of it. She’s a tosser. She’s a total tosser! That’s how we would describe her. I just can’t… the way she speaks.”
Newsreader Edwina Bartholomew, who recently returned to the show from maternity leave, offered a more measured response.
“I think she has a very different narrative, perhaps, in the U.S. to what is being accepted in the UK,” Bartholomew said.
“Or just everywhere in the world,” Barr scoffed.
Markle also opened up about her time as a working member of the Royal family and said she was told what to say and wear, just like when she worked as an actor.
“I was an actress. My entire job was, ‘Tell me where to stand. Tell me what to say. Tell me how to say it. Tell me what to wear, and I’ll do it’,” she told the publication.
“And I’ll show up early, and I’ll probably bake something for the crew.”
Markle claimed other Royals were allowed to carry out their duties on their terms.
“That, for whatever reason, is not something that we were allowed to do, even though several other members of the family do that exact thing.”
