Should hyaluronic acid be applied before we shower? TikTok thinks so, so we asked the experts

We all know that hyaluronic acid is one of the best ingredients (if not the best ingredient) when it comes to hydrating our skin. In fact, I’ve never met a dermatologist who doesn’t recommend hyaluronic acid for every skin type, tone and age. After all, it’s the miracle moisture-loving molecule that can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water, helping to plump skin instantly and provide moisture skin long term.

We also all know that TikTok can be a great source of information, and misinformation, especially when it comes to beauty. While there have been some epic makeup and hair hacks that have quite rightfully reached viral status, there have also been some slightly more problematic skincare myths circulating that could be detrimental to the efficacy of your products, or worse, your skin itself.

One skincare hack we’ve seen doing the rounds on the platform recently is to apply hyaluronic acid serums before showering. Now, we can see where this advice from. Hyaluronic acid attracts water, so put it on before showering and you’ll attract all the water, right? Well, no, not exactly.

According to dermatologists and skincare experts, that’s not exactly how the mechanism of hyaluronic acid works and to figure out why, we have to take a closer look at hyaluronic acid serums. Usually, hyaluronic acid serums contain a few different sizes of hyaluronic acid molecules. The bigger sizes sit on the skin surface and draw in moisture for that immediate glow up, while the smaller ones penetrate deep into the skin to plump from the inside out.

“In order for HA to provide immediate plumping the larger molecules sit on top of the skin,” notes Margo Marrone, pharmacist, homeopath and co-founder of The Organic Pharmacy. “Applying it before washing or showering will just wash all that goodness away and you won’t see that instant glowing result.”

In fact, experts say that applying a hyaluronic acid serum directly after showering, while still in the bathroom, is the best thing to do. “I would recommend applying the product straight out of the shower (not before or in the shower!) while the skin is still a little bit damp and the room is steamy,” Karen-Lee Thompson, founder of eco-monodosing brand Wo Skincare. “This is because the hyaluronic acid will attract the moisture in the air into the skin, helping to achieve optimal hydration.”

Glad we’ve cleared that up.

Hyaluronic acid is the equivalent of a big glass of water for sapped skin. We’ve picked the best to try
