It was earlier reported that the Parisian giants were close to agreeing a new contract with the World Cup-winning Argentina international. However, things have changed over the last few weeks, particularly since PSG have been eliminated from the Champions League from the Round of 16 stage.

Now it is being claimed that PSG could let Messi go as they look to rebuild their side while it has also been claimed that Messi has himself stalled all offers. A return to Barcelona has been constantly discussed as a possibility for the Argentina international. And, it would arguably be the best possible decision for the 35-year-old.

Despite his age, Messi remains a top player and still seems to have plenty of football left in him at the highest level and a return to his home Barcelona is thought to be the best possible scenario for the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner especially with his former teammate Xavi Hernandez in charge.

Messi leaving Barcelona was never thought to be a distant possibility but the Blaugrana’s financial struggles led to the unlikely situation. While the Catalan giants are yet to fully recover from the financial collapse, they are in a much healthier state right now. Although, it remains to be seen whether then can afford Messi’s wages but that should not be too big a problem if they can offload some players.

Messi is the greatest player ever to don the Barcelona shirt and returning to the Catalan club would be a dream come true for fans. The Argentine superstar won a total of 34 trophies during his time at Camp Nou and would make the Blaugrana a lot stronger if he comes back. Messi has been on fire for PSG this season scoring 18 goals and providing 17 assists in 35 games.
