With the advent of streaming platforms at each of the major studios or entertainment companies, late sequels, remakes, and revivals have become an everyday thing. After reviving other network classics, Showtime announces the returns of Weeds and Nurse Jackie with revivals that will continue the original stories.
Deadline confirms that Lionsgate Television is actively working with Showtime to bring back two of its most acclaimed series, which ended more than 10 years ago. At the moment, no more details have been shared as both projects are in the early stages of development, but the outlet revealed that actresses Edie Falco and Mary-Louise Parker will return to star in each of the respective revivals.
Weeds and Nurse Jackie will join Showtime’s list of returning shows such as Dexter: New Blood, which won’t continue after a single installment but already has a prequel series in development. Other recent returns include Queer as Folk, which was sadly not well received by fans, and The L Word: Generation Q, which was recently canceled after its third season. Fortunately, the universe of The L Word will continue with another series set in New York.
What are Weeds and Nurse Jackie About?
Premiered in 2005, Weeds was created by Jeni Kohan, the woman behind Orange is the New Black. It ran for eight seasons, ending in 2012. The series starred Mary-Louise Parker, Justin Kirk, Hunter Parrish, Alexander Gould, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kevin Nealon, Andy Milder, Elizabeth Perkins and Allie Grant.
The story follows widower Nancy Botwin, who finds herself unable to maintain her family after her husband’s passing. In order to keep living the way they did before, she starts selling weed to her neighbors in the idyllic city of Agrestic in California. Weeds centered on the whole Botwin family, focusing on Nancy but her sons too, and showing the difficulties that they go through as their illegal business grows and gets more popular every day. The show is still considered one of the best from the network, and back in the days got nominated and won a decent number of awards, including Emmys and Golden Globes.
Nurse Jackie was released in 2009 and ended its run in 2015, after seven seasons and 80 episodes. It starred Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton, Eve Best as Dr. Eleanor O’Hara, Merritt Wever as Zoey Barkow, Paul Schulze as Eddie Walzer, Peter Facinelli as Dr. Fitch “Coop” Cooper, Dominic Fumusa as Kevin Peyton, Anna Deavere Smith as Mrs. Gloria Akalitus, and Stephen Wallem as Thor Lundgren among others.
Nurse Jackie was created by Liz Brixius, Linda Wallem and Evan Dunsky, and followed the titular character as she dealt with her job at a New York City hospital, other nurses, doctors and her personal dramas. The series was a huge success and very well-received by critics, earning many nominations for the Primetime Emmys, Golden Globes and more.
There are no release dates yet set for the revivals.
