NEW DELHI: India star opener Shubman Gill has been fined 15% of his match fees for questioning an umpiring decision, on social media, against him during the World Test Championship (WTC) Final.
Chasing a mammoth 444-run target, Shubman was dismissed for 18 when Cameron Green took a remarkable catch at gully.
However, there were differing opinions on whether it was a clean catch.
Despite video replays not conclusively confirming whether the ball had made contact with the ground during Green’s catch, the third umpire, Richard Kettleborough, upheld Australia’s appeal. Shubman, who scored 13 runs in the first innings, departed for 18 in the second innings.
Following his dismissal, Shubman took to Twitter and shared a front-on angle image of the catch, expressing his disbelief. In the tweet, he included two magnifying glasses and a facepalm emoji, conveying his astonishment at the decision.
The 23-year-old’s post breached article 2.7 of the ICC’s code of conduct relating to “public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match”, the ICC said in a statement.
Shubman accepted the sanction so there was no need for a formal hearing, it said.
