AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend I’m visiting Riverdale with The Archies & Josie and the Pussycats, written by Dan Parent, with pencils by Bill Galavan, inking by Rich Koslowski & Jim Amash, lettering by Jack Morelli, and coloring by Glenn Whitmore & Tom Chu. Flipping the book over, I see our own fearless lead singer, Editor-in-Chief Heidi MacDonald, has a pull quote on the back. After Archie, I’ll be revisiting one of my favorite graphic novels: P.E.O.W.: Painfully Embarrassing Otaku Weekend. “The book based off the best selling t-shirt!”
DEAN SIMONS: Last weekend I was sick and stayed rather sick through the week which gave me some extra time for comfort reading – and that reading was Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece. Having blitzed through the entirety of the Fish Man Island arc (volumes 62-66), I am now beginning Punk Hazard – in which the crew finally enter the Grand Line’s New World. What new foes and friends will the Straw Hat Pirates meet?
CY BELTRAN: Still on my King-kick, I snagged a copy of The Shining to hunker down and see what it’s all about. Plus, I’m interested to see how it differs from the Kubrick film – so far there are a bunch of interesting differences! I also had a chance to stop by Quimby’s Bookstore in Wicker Park last weekend, where I grabbed Caroline Cash’s latest PeePee-PooPoo, along with the 2021 collection (which I was sad to miss the first time around!). Lastly, don’t forget today is Indie Bookstore Day, so go support your local indie book/comic shops!
TAIMUR DAR: A few weeks back, I had the pleasure of attending the Count Crowley: Amateur Midnight Monster Hunter signing with author David Dastmalchian at Midtown Comics. Having admired his work as an actor for years and even getting to interview him for his role as Calendar Man in the Batman: The Long Halloween animated movie, I can confirm he is indeed as nice as everyone says he is. I’ve been so busy, my signed copy of the Count Crowley: Amateur Midnight Monster Hunter TPB has been sitting on my shelf all this time. So I aim to finally properly read the trade.
REBECCA OLIVER KAPLAN: It’s weird to have so much free time on the weekend, but now that I don’t have a shitty Valnet job I have a lot more time… And I am EXCITED about that. The sky’s the limit! I’m starting with some comics that I think will be pure girly fun as a small fuck you to all the shitty men I’ve had to deal with in my life. I’ll be reading a book from the Chris Ryall era of IDW, GLOW: The Stars Primas by Tini Howard, Hannah Templer, Rebecca Nalty, Christa Miesner, and editors Elizabeth Brei and Megan Brown. Then, I’m checking out Black Cat Social Club: A Pop Punk Apocalypse by Christopher Painter, Bob Quinn, Meg Casey, Fred C. Stresing, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.
