Most drivers dread their annual MOTs knowing that even minor faults could result in a failure. However, according to Dorry Potter, an expert at National Scrap Car, there are ways to prepare vehicles for the test and minimise the chances of failure. This may include simple things such as cleaning the car and checking if the horn works. The tips will be especially useful now as the UK is in the middle of MOT season.
Ms Potter said: “MOT experts at National Scrap Car have been looking into the top reasons for why cars fail their MOT and warn that motorists could help prevent an MOT failure by doing the following simple checks.”
Cleaning the vehicle
Ms Potter stressed that before taking a car for an MOT drivers should clean it thoroughly inside and out.
She added: “This should be done from the front seats to the back seats and finally to the boot. An unclean car could lead to an examiner refusing to perform an MOT.”

Checking the mirrors
The expert advised that drivers check all the mirrors and that includes the internal ones.
Ms Potter said that if the mirrors are not in a good condition or are shattered, chances are the vehicle will not pass its MOT.
Checking the lights
Ms Potter advised: “Lights are a common reason for MOT failure. Make sure that your brake, front, and rear lights are working correctly.
The tread must meet this minimum requirement across its complete circumference to be legal.
Ms Potter said: “You can check your tyre tread by inserting a 20p coin into the tread grooves. If you cannot see the outer band on the coin then your tyres are above the legal limits.
“If you are unsure of your car’s correct pressure level, you can often find the recommended pressure levels in the owner’s manual or the fuel cap. You can then set the air machine to the recommended level whether at home or a petrol station.”
Checking windscreen wipers
Lastly, Ms Potter stressed that drivers should inspect their wipers for any nicks or damage which could lower their effectiveness. If any damage is found motorists should replace them immediately.
