Sir Jim Ratcliffe ‘racing’ to seal Man Utd takeover as impact of delay emerges

Manchester United takeover hopeful Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly ‘racing against the clock’ to push through his proposed deal. Current owners the Glazers are yet to confirm their final decision, and further delay could have spillover effects on the summer transfer window for manager Erik ten Hag.

Reports indicated earlier this week that United co-chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer had selected Sir Jim’s proposal as their preferred option. His offer would allow the American billionaires to retain a minority stake, and therefore a continued say in the boardroom.

Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani is also in the running, but his proposal is to acquire 100 per cent of the Red Devils. With Sir Jim and INEOS’ bid steaming towards completion, the British petrochemicals tycoon is now hoping things progress quickly to avoid ‘chaos‘ this summer.

According to The Sun, Sir Jim is yet to receive the Glazers’ green light, and with further due diligence threatening to take at least a month, his company face not being able to make financial decisions at Old Trafford until after the transfer window opens.

The Glazers’ slow approach to the takeover process could make them even more unpopular with fans if it negatively effect Ten Hag’s transfer plans. Sir Jim and INEOS are likely to be growing impatient, with the summer window poised to open on June 13.

Senior figures at United will be keen to hit the ground running, having spent most of last summer chasing an ill-fated deal for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong. This time around, the Red Devils have been tipped to swoop for Harry Kane.

Red Devils fans also hope that Sir Jim’s bid will cover the renovation of Old Trafford and the club’s Carrington training facilities. However, squad improvements are a more pressing issue with fellow Champions League chasers set to strengthen over the coming months.

Ten Hag has been a success during his first season in the Premier League. But while he already has the Carabao Cup in his back pocket, a downturn in domestic form has left United at risk of dropping down to fifth before the end of the campaign.
