Payne Motors is no more.

“American Auto,” a sitcom starring Ana Gasteyer as the CEO of a fictional, century-old Detroit automaker struggling to stay competitive in a fast-changing industry, was canceled by NBC after 23 episodes.

The show averaged about 2.3 million viewers in its second season, which ended in April, and was one of several NBC comedies canceled to make way for a new series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Season 2 saw Payne Motors experience a litany of misfortune after launching a $10,000 econobox called the Pika. The company recalled the car after it started a massive forest fire; accidentally created self-driving technology that can’t detect Black pedestrians; and invested $300 million in a fraudulent Silicon Valley tech company.

The season concluded with Gasteyer’s Katherine Hastings and other executives managing to keep their jobs when sales of the Pika unexpectedly took off and the company’s stock price rebounded.

“Season 3 of American Auto was going to show Katherine Hastings and Payne Motors finally finding success and taking the world by storm,” the show’s creator, Justin Spitzer, tweeted after the cancellation news. “I’m so sorry we didn’t get to make those episodes, but I’m immensely proud of the 23 episodes of the show we did put out there. Thank you so much to our outstanding cast, writers, crew, and fans. Lemme know if anyone wants to buy a Pika.”

NBC picked up a new project from Spitzer called “St. Denis Medical,” a mockumentary set in a hospital.
