Afghanistan are currently leading the series 1-0 after winning the first ODI at the same venue by six wickets on Friday. This will be the ninth encounter between the sides with Sri Lanka leading the head-to-head 4-3 with no result in one match. The series is also preparatory for World No. 9 Sri Lanka, who will compete in the World Cup qualifiers in June in Zimbabwe.

Injury update Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan is unavailable for the match after sustaining a back injury during the IPL 2023. Sri Lankan pacer Lahiru Kumara hoped off the field midway through his fifth over.
SL vs AFG key players
SL (Wicketkeepers: Kusal Mendis) Kusal Mendis has scored runs this season with two big knocks in the Test series against Ireland but his series was off to a bad start with just 11 runs.
(Batter: Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Dasun Shanaka, Charith Asalanka, Angelo Matthews) Pathum Nissanka has scored two half-centuries in his last three ODI innings and scored a steady 38 with top-order wickets falling around him. Dimuth Karunaratne flopped in the last game but has been in good form with runs against New Zealand and Ireland earlier.
Charith Asalanka built on his half-century against New Zealand with a 91-run innings in the last game and was the top-scorer for Sri Lanka in the last game. Skipper Dasun Shanaka scored just 17 in the last game after playing the IPL from the bench. Meanwhile, Angelo Matthews’ struggle in the limited format continued despite scoring a Test century recently.
(All-rounders: Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushan Hemantha Dhananjaya de Silva, Chamika Karunaratne) Wanindu Hasaranga didn’t play the last game but may come into the game as leg spinner Dushan Hemantha failed to pick wickets in the last game after scoring 22 with the bat. Hasaranga, however, went wicketless in his last two ODIs as well.
Spin all-rounder Dhananjaya de Silva impressed with a half-century but went wicketless with a spell of 0-44. Pace all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne, who took a four-for in New Zealand earlier this year, didn’t play the last game but may return to the line-up with Lahiru uncertain.
(Bowlers: Kasun Rajitha, Matheesha Pathirana, Dushmantha Chameera) Kasun Rajitha continued his good form with the white ball as the pacer took two wickets in the last game. Matheesha Pathirana’s much-awaited ODI debut didn’t go as per plan as the pacer concede 66 runs in nine overs in return for a wicket. Dushmantha Chameera, who last played for Sri Lanka in October, is also an option to replace Lahiru Kumara in the pace bowling line-up.
AFG (Wicketkeeper: Rahmanullah Gurbaz) Rahmanullah and his pinch-hitting abilities always entertain crowd but his inconsistency is a concern. The opener scored 14 runs after a hit-or-miss outing in the IPL.
(Batters: Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Ibrahim Zadran, Najibullah Zadran) Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah brought their domestic form to the series with match-winning knocks of 98 and 55. Shah also continued his good form against Lanka.
Skipper Hasmatullah Shahidi, who last played for Afghanistan in the ODI series in Lanka last year, made his international return with a good knock of 38. The batter also put on a good show in the domestic season. Najibullah Zadran once again stayed for the end as he is tasked with the role of the finisher and did the job well in the T20Is against Pakistan.
(All-rounders: Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah Omarzai) Senior all-rounder Mohammad Nabi had a decent outing as he contributed 27 not out after bowling 1/31 (7 overs). Azmatullah Omarzai bowled a decent spell of 1/35 as well and a handy pinch-hitter in the death overs if needed.
(Bowler: Fazalhaq Farooqi, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fareed Ahmad) Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled a good spell of 2/58 after having a quiet IPL stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Leg spinner Noor Ahmad, who took 16 wickets in IPL, struggled to contain runs as the mystery spinner gave away 54 runs in eight overs in return of a wicket.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman had a better outing as he bowled 1/45 in 10 overs. Rahman came into the series taking 10 wickets in six domestic games and also was impactful in the home series against Pakistan. Left-arm pacer Fareed Ahmad Malik, who played just one game in the Pakistan series, bowled an impressive 2/43 spell.
