Longtime favorite Ringer Hut may be gone from Saratoga Avenue, a victim of the COVID-19 economy. But another popular Japanese restaurant has taken its place.
Udon Mugizo, credited with helping launch the Bay Area’s udon noodle craze when it opened in 2014 in San Francisco’s Japantown, is now making noodles and dashi broth fresh daily in San Jose after previously expanding to Castro Street in Mountain View.
A whopping 17 varieties of udon bowls are offered, including Mugizo’s signature recipes — Sea Urchin Cream Sauce Udon, with parmesan (they make only 20 bowls a day of this one), the Mentai Cream Sauce Udon, with seasoned cod roe, and the Salmon Spinach Cream Sauce Udon, featuring raw smoked salmon.
Other options include Tonkotsu Udon, Curry Udon, Beef Sukiyaki Udon and five varieties of cold udon.
You can also order fresh, uncooked noodles to create bowls at home.
Rounding out the menu are tempura, donburi and gyoza, plus a wide selection of sake, plum wine, Japanese beer and sparkling juice.
Details: Open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. Takeout orders right now must be made in person during business hours; no phone or online orders. 1072 Saratoga Ave., San Jose; www.mugizo-us.com
