Snooker referee Michaela Tabb is set to make £1million this year.
As part of her business venture, Blackball Tables, the official is on course to become a millionaire. The company sells pool tables and accessories – and what makes the feat all the more remarkable is that the 54-year-old only opened the business four years ago, in 2018.
And now she is set to make seven figures. Tabb said to The Courie r about the landmark: “I’m immensely proud. The numbers scare me. We sat down and worked out a turnover target of £800,000. I looked at it and didn’t understand why we had that as a target.
“To be honest, I just didn’t think it was achievable. I didn’t have the experience to be able to break it down and plan how to make it work. To know we’re surpassing that is unbelievable.”
Tabb took charge of the Masters final at Wembley in 2008. She also officiated the World Snooker Championship finals at the Crucible in 2009 and 2012. But the Scotswoman, from her home in Dunfermline, has left the sport behind to make it in the world of business.

The company sells tables anywhere between £1,395 and £1,595. Each one includes all the accessories you need for the game: cues, cue racks, scoreboards, and triangles. But even though the company is thriving, being the first female professional referee she feels is the real achievement.
She said: “I think that’s the legacy I’ve left the sport. You see a lot more women now and I know that’s because I opened the door for them.”

Tabb started her career officiating blackball in 1991, at the age of 23. She then became involved in pool, before transitioning to snooker. In 2002, she became the first woman to referee at a professional ranking snooker tournament, overseeing Ken Doherty and James Wattana’s match at the 2002 Welsh Open.
