His name was trending on Twitter earlier this month and is again after SBS analyst Lucy Zelic called for Australians to stop using Socceroos star Jason Cummings’ ‘degrading’ nickname.
The nickname ‘Cumdog’ is self-appointed and comes from when he wrestled during his playing time at the Scottish club Hibernian, he revealed in a Q&A session.
“I got that nickname… it was my wrestling nickname,” Cummings explained.
“I wrestled some guy called Grado, a wrestler in Scotland, and he came in when I was at Hibs [Hibernian].
“He came in and he was giving it the big one so I chucked on the Spandex, put ‘Cumdog’ on the chest and I battered him.
“The rest was history. Everyone’s called me Cumdog since then but now I’m in Australia, and everyone is calling me the Cumdingo. So the Cumdog or Cumdingo, no problem.”
However, Zelic took to Twitter to quickly acknowledge the derogatory nature of the nickname after it was used by Optus Sport.
“Please, please, please for the love of God,” she said.
“Can we stop calling him this dreadful nickname?
“He’s represented our country for goodness sake.
“This is just revolting and so tacky.”
One user backed up Zelic by citing the Urban Dictionary definition of ‘Cumdog’ to mean something incredibly degrading to women.
Regardless, others encouraged the use of the nickname and called for Zelic to ‘have a bit of fun’.
Cummings — who was part of Australia’s history-making Socceroos squad at the World Cup earlier this month — was recently involved in a Twitter stoush with French superstar Olivier Giroud.
The Aussie footballer claims he asked Giroud to trade his playing shirt with him after Australia’s 3 – 1 loss against France, to which Giroud ignored him.
Cummings alleged that Giroud mustn’t speak much English.
“He just walked past me, pretending he never spoke English! And he’s been in the Premier League for 10 years!”
“He just walked right past me!”
Giroud fired back on Twitter by revealing he had actually swapped jerseys with fellow Aussie Jackson Irvine.
“Hi Jackson Irvine, how is my English mate?”
The post contained a front and back picture of Irvine’s playing jersey.
