‘Sociopath’: Amy Schumer gives Hilaria Baldwin long-needed roasting for faking Spanish heritage

Alec and Hilaria Baldwin may have thought that the hardest part of their recent scandals was behind them, especially after prosecutors in New Mexico dropped involuntary manslaughter charges against the “30 Rock” star for accidentally shooting cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his Western movie in 2021.

But Amy Schumer isn’t letting the world forget that she thinks the couple can be arrogant, self-serving and unrepentant. She uses a portion of her new Netflix comedy special to remind everyone that the Boston-born Hilaria Baldwin spent a decade pretending to be a glamorous yoga instructor from Spain — with Alec Baldwin’s apparent knowledge and possible approval.

Schumer calls Hilaria Baldwin a “sociopath” in her special, “Emergency Contact,” while also saying that the mother of seven and her movie star husband “don’t give a (expletive)” about anything they do. She seems to be referring to Hilaria appropriating a cultural identity, Alec fatally shooting someone on a movie set and the couple together producing a “von Trapp amount of children.”

“This woman, since she met her husband, has straight-up pretended she is from Spain,” Schumer quipped.”And her husband shot someone. Now stay with me! My point is that neither of them give a (expletive).”

“I’m not trying to bully a sociopath. I have a point,” Schumer continued, saying that she first met Hilaria Baldwin backstage at “Saturday Night Live,” presumably when Alec Baldwin was hosting the show or doing one of his turns as then-President Trump. Schumer described Baldwin’s influencer wife as petite and glamorous, “like a Disney princess.” Slipping into a Spanish accent in the manner of Hilaria Baldwin, Schumer joked that the woman introduced herself as “Hilaria from España.”

Schumer reminded her audience of some of the key details of Hilaria Baldwin’s very bizarre Spanish heritage scandal. It erupted at the end of 2020 after people began posting online that they had uncovered multiple instances of Alec Baldwin’s wife putting on a Spanish accent and talking up a Spanish background in interviews, podcast appearances and even at the United Nations.

In one notable case, Hilaria Baldwin appeared on the “Today” show to demonstrate making gazpacho and saying she was struggling to remember the English word for “cucumber.” At the same time, people online found extensive evidence that both of Hilaria Baldwin’s parents have roots in New England that go back generations.

“I cannot tell you how much her family is not from Spain,” Schumer said. “They were on the Mayflower. That’s how much this chick is from Boston.”

Schumer said she assumes that Hilaria Baldwin once went on vacation in Spain and loved it. Schumer said she, too, has vacationed in Spain. “It’s great. I loved it!” But slipping back into the Spanish accent, Schumer said Hilaria “(expletive) loved it!”

Hilaria Baldwin loved it so much, Schumer said, that she decided to say that she was from Spain. Schumer also said her commitment to pushing a Spanish identity extended to giving all of her seven children very “Spanish names like Jamón and Croqueta and Flamenco.” Schumer then joked that anyone can make up the place they are from. “On my driver’s license, it’s says I’m from Splash Mountain.”

In her set, Schumer doesn’t mention that she had a role in exposing what one online user called Hilaria Baldwin’s “grift.” While questions about Hilaria Baldwins’ true heritage had been simmering for years, Schumer pushed those questions into the mainstream in late 2020 after she poked fun at Hilaria Baldwin’s practice of posting photos of herself in bra and panties, holding one of her children, breastfeeding or doing yoga.

Hilaria Baldwin said she posted one particular photo — showing off an enviably flat stomach — in order to share her pride in her body, soon after giving birth to one of her children. Schumer reposted that photo on her Instagram account with a cheeky caption, suggesting that it was her in the photo, soon after giving birth to her son.

Hilaria Baldwin took issue with Schumer and others for mocking her photo and posted a video message on Instagram, calling people out for “body shaming.” People watching Hilaria Baldwin’s video noticed that her usual Spanish accent was absent, prompting people to fire up questions about her heritage.

Schumer’s comedy set was framed in commentary about marriage, including the line that “marriage is finding someone who can stand you.” She acknowledged that this definition isn’t “too romantic,” but she also said it could apply to the marriage of Alec and Hilaria Baldwin, suggesting that each might be the only two people who can stand the other.

Schumer has previously used Alec Baldwin’s shooting of Hutchins as a topic for her dark humor, Page Six reported. During a performance in Las Vegas, she told the audience that her lawyer did not want her to make a specific joke at the Oscars.

“‘Don’t Look Up’ is the name of a movie? More like don’t look down the barrel of Alec Baldwin’s shotgun,” Schumer quipped.

“I wasn’t allowed to say any of that, but you can just come up and (slap) someone,” she continued, referring to Will Smith infamously hitting Chris Rock.
