Softball notebook: Oaks Christian, Sierra Canyon advance in CIF-SS playoffs; City pairings announced

Oaks Christian, the Daily News’ top softball team, is still alive after taking down Chino Hills 5-1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs this week. Rylee McCoy, Anahi Arreola, Ilove’a Brittingham and Heaven Oliva each hit solo homers in the victory. Emelia Davis pitched a complete game and had two strikeouts.

The win gives the Lions a 27-1-1 record heading into Tuesday’s second-round home game against Orange Lutheran at 3:15 p.m.

In Division 2, Moorpark topped El Segundo 6-0 in the first round thanks to Driana Martinez’ 3-for-3 performance with a home run and three RBI. Hailey Salgado helped Saugus beat Redondo Union 8-5 with two hits and three RBI. No. 1-seeded Moorpark will travel to Saugus in the second round Tuesday to set up a nice double-local playoff matchup.

Sierra Canyon has proven to be tough on the road this postseason, taking down Santa Margarita 4-3 in a Division 3 wildcard game on Tuesday before beating Sunny Hills of Fullerton 6-1 Friday.

Maddie Debs hit a two-run homer and had a two-run double in the win over Sunny Hills. Hailey Shuler threw a complete game and struck out nine. The Trailblazers will host Diamond Ranch in the second round Tuesday.

In Division 4, Chino will play at Burroughs and Foothill is at Highland.

HIGHLANDERS SEEDED NO.1

Granada Hills earned the No. 1 seed in the City Section Open Division playoffs, which were revealed Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders finished the regular season 22-4 overall and went 10-0 in the West Valley League en route to being the top seed in the section’s top playoff division.

Granada Hills will host Banning in the opening round on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Birmingham earned the No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 Eagle Rock, No. 4 El Camino will host No. 5 Kennedy, and No. 2 Carson will host No. 7 Venice to round-out the eight-team field.

In Division I, Chavez earned the No. 1 seed which earned the it a bye in the first round before taking on the winner of Roosevelt-Bravo in the second round on May 15.

Second-seeded San Fernando will host No. 15 Fairfax, No. 7 Legacy will host No. 10 Sun Valley Poly, and No. 3 Marshall will host No. 14 Chatsworth. All opening round games are scheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m.
