Q: Are there really any trucks on Interstate 5 that only go 55 mph? I’ve never seen one.
Douglas Abbott, Union City
A: Oh, there are some who adhere to 55 mph, but others crank it up to 65 mph or higher when they can.
Q: I recently renewed my car registration online instead of going to the kiosk. I paid it online on Martin Luther King Day and got my new registration sticker in the mail on Groundhog Day. Just thought you readers might want to know how long it’s currently taking.
I may go back to the kiosk at Safeway next time.
Steph Zervas, Millbrae
A: One of the hundreds of DMV Now kiosks throughout the state can be used to help you complete your vehicle registration renewal, submit proof of insurance, receive a driver or vehicle record, and more. Simply scan your document, pay the fees using a card or cash (where available), and then print your registration card.
Q: What are the latest plans for fixing Highway 37 in the North Bay, near Sears Point, where it can often flood.
Frank Reyes
A: We should know more later this year. The Marin Independent Journal reports that the state is beginning to study several options to rebuild or reroute the highway, including raising the existing road, rerouting it farther north and even building a new bridge across San Pablo Bay.
Time is running out, as the Marin IJ notes, explaining that by 2040, sea-level rise threatens to regularly inundate the 21-mile highway.
Caltrans has developed eight concepts for how it could reroute or rebuild Highway 37 to address other issues, as well as flooding concerns. One possible plan calls for building a separated bike and pedestrian path along the new corridor, as well as integrating transit options, such as bus routes, trains and ferries.
Also a possibility is the addition of a third Highway 37 lane to be a carpool lane, which could be shifted to the westbound or eastbound direction, based on peak commute times.
A moveable barrier — similar to that used on the Golden Gate Bridge — is being discussed as part of this idea.
Q: You wrote a comment from a reader upset with the neighbor’s cats and the way they used the reader’s yard, and said that is one more reason why cats are not man’s best friend.
Tony DiBenedetto, San Jose
A: And…
Q: Oh, Gary, your email inbox must be filling up with angry comments from cat lovers.
Eamon Gormley
A: My inbox did not fill up with their comments. We must all agree, then, that dogs, indeed, are man’s best friend.
