If we get too bold with our hot takes, the house of mouse will probably put a bounty out on our heads — so let’s be direct. Here goes nothing (deep breah): Grogu and Mando should never have been reunited as soon as they were. Search your feelings, you know it to be true.
Doesn’t that feel better? The harsh reality is that by bringing these two back together during The Book of Boba Fett, the emotional season two finale of The Madalorian has been completely undone. One Reddit user seems to agree with us, and frankly — they’re in-depth posting around the subject is pretty airtight.
You’re allowed to believe whatever you want, but we’re not so sure that reuniting Grogu and Din Djarin (the Mandalorian) is really what the show needed, narratively speaking. Think about it; there Mando stood, helmet off, tears in his eyes, as baby Grogu was ushered away by Luke fricken’ Skywalker. He was crying; we were crying; everyone was crying.
It was the culmination of a two season arc that resulted in Grogu being taken down the path of a Jedi, and Mando being left to navigate the galaxy a changed man — no longer the cold, calculating bounty hunter he once was, but now an empathetic anti-hero on a mission to do good.
The Mandolorian was given an opportunity to reset, and more importantly, find a new voice. The harsh reality is that the series can’t be the Grogu/Mando show forever. Sure, this duo is about as iconic as they come, but sending them out the same adventures over and over again isn’t the type of storytelling fans need from Star Wars right now.
There’s just one slight problem. Grogu is a cash cow. As far Disney is concerned, this little green guy is the best thing since sliced bread, and the amount of baby Yoda merch the company can push is truly astonishing. Risking that sort of investment is definitely not on the table, and at least someone else out there thinks so too.
He’s on shirts, he’s on lunchboxes, he’s even been made into a nifty night-light. The point is, Grogu is everywhere, and for that reason — isn’t going anywhere.
When you think about it though, bringing Mando and Grogu back for season third of The Mandalorian isn’t that big of a deal. Was it the right choice? Maybe, maybe not. Still, nothing changes how excited we are for the show’s premiere on March 1. Regardless of who’s in the cockpit — we’ll be ready to return to that galaxy far, far away.
