The Hori Split Pad Compact is one of the best ways to play Switch in handheld mode, thanks to its slim design, programmable rear buttons, and back grips for added comfort. The quirky accessory is available with several different designs–including Apricot Red and a purple model inspired by Gengar–and two more will be joining the party later this year. On October 31, Hori is adding Pac-Man and Sonic designs to the Split Pad Compact catalog.
Ahead of their launch this fall, both products are now up for preorder. Here’s a closer look at both.

As you’d expect, the only thing that’s different between this version and the standard version is its artwork. The turbo and programmable buttons are still here, as are the ergonomic back grips and slim form factor. The only thing that’s new is the visual design–which features Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles on the front and a deep blue on the back. It’s also officially licensed by Sega and Nintendo, so you know you’re getting a quality product.

It’s a similar story for the Pac-Man edition. The front features a black and yellow design, complete with yellow triggers and analog sticks, along with a depiction of Pac-Man on the right Joy-Con. You’ll also find members of the Ghost Gang scattered across the front of the controller. This edition is officially licensed by Nintendo and Bandai-Namco.
“Hori’s Split Pad Compact is my new favorite controller for handheld gaming on Nintendo Switch,” wrote critic Steven Petite. “It has everything you could want in a Joy-Con replacement: great sticks, an actual D-pad, ample triggers, remappable back buttons, and, most importantly, truly sublime ergonomics. After spending the past month using the Split Pad Compact almost daily, I can say that I’ll never go back to any other handheld-focused controllers or grips I own.”
If you’re interested in the Sonic or Pac-Man versions, be sure to get your preorders in soon, as they’re bound to be popular.
