After months of rumours, Sega has confirmed retro compilation Sonic Origin Plus is real but they’ve not said anything about fixing any bugs.

Although it was still an enjoyable collection of Mega Drive era Sonic The Hedgehog games, last year’s Sonic Origins was not the definitive version of the games that fans had hoped for.

Bugs and a general lack of content meant it was of little interest to those that had already bought the games a dozen times over but now, after multiple rumours, Sega has announced Sonic Origins Plus, to try and improve the situation.

That will include adding 12 Game Gear games, that weren’t included in the original version, the ability to play as Amy in any of the Mega Drive games, and as Knuckles in Sonic CD.

The original version of Sonic Origins included only Mega Drive games Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Mega-CD title Sonic CD.

Sonic Origins Plus will include those plus all the existing DLC, which was heavily criticised the first time round for being exploitative.

Sonic Origins Plus Game Gear games

  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Sonic Chaos
  • Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball
  • Sonic The Hedgehog: Triple Trouble
  • Sonic Labyrinth
  • Sonic Blast
  • Sonic Drift
  • Sonic Drift 2
  • Tails’ Skypatrol
  • Tails Adventure
  • Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine

The new version will be available for £34.99 on all formats, but if you already own Sonic Origins you can pay £7.99 to upgrade to the Plus edition.

Unsurprisingly, Sega doesn’t mention about fixing all the bugs, but hopefully that will be a part of it.

Weirdly, they’ve also failed to confirm what the Game Gear games are but presumably they’re the list above, since those are all the Sonic-related games on the portable.

It does all seem a bit random though, and it’s a shame they didn’t just throw in all the pre-Dreamcast games, including the Master System titles and the various Mega Drive spin-offs.
