Last week, PlayStation announced the pretty unpopular move of raising the prices of a yearly subscription for its PS Plus subscription service. Seemingly making things worse was the fact that this was hidden within the announcement of the free games for subscribers for the month of September. For those of us in Malaysia, it looks like the bad news just got slightly worse.
In an unmarked update on the initial announcement post, PlayStation added that the prices for the 1-month and 3-month PS Plus subscriptions will also be going up for the Malaysian and Thai market. As they are now, the prices for the 1-month subscription for PS Plus Essential, Extra and Deluxe are RM29, RM44 and RM50 respectively. These are slated to go up to RM32, RM49 and RM55. Similarly, the 3-month subscription prices are currently RM69, RM114 and RM130, but will be raised to RM75, RM125 and RM145, respectively.
As mentioned in the previous report, even with the increased price of the 1-year subscription of PS Plus, it would have been more expensive to do it on a monthly or quarterly basis. Now, that their prices have also been increased, the annual subscription becomes even more obvious as a choice.
It’s not specifically noted when the new prices for the 1-month and 3-month subscriptions will go into effect. But considering it’s been squeezed into the same post, it’s probably safe to expect the changes to happen tomorrow, 6 September, alongside the yearly subscription price hike. While you’re here, let this also be a reminder for existing subscribers to also claim your free games, regardless of what you may think of them.
