Sophie Countess of Wessex, the Queen’s ‘confidante’, pays her final respects to Her Majesty

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, arrived at Westminster Abbey on Monday to pay her final respect to Queen Elizabeth, who passed away at age 96 last week.

The 57-year-old arrived alongside the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle, while her husband, Earl of Wessex Prince Edward attended the ceremony with his brother King Charles III, Prince Andrew, sister Princess Anne and nephews, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Sussex.

Sophie, who was said to have become Her Majesty’s “second daughter” and her trusted confidante, was seen wiping away tears during the funeral. She shared a particularly close bond with the Queen, with them first striking up a close friendship when the Queen lost her sister, Princess Margaret.

Their bond was tightened three years later when Sophie’s mother died. Sophie was also distraught following the passing of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, last year.

While it has yet to be confirmed, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, is likely to inherit the title of Duchess of Edinburgh when her husband inherits the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

It has also been reported that Sophie will inherit several patronages held by Her Majesty, including the Women’s Institute and Dogs Trust.

A royal source told The Mirror: “The Queen and the countess had a fantastically warm and joyful relationship. Her Majesty admired Sophie’s quiet sense of duty, her strong work ethic and the way she balanced her public and family lives, and they also shared many of the same interests.

“The Queen’s decision to pass on these patronages reflects the closeness of their bond. Sophie’s growing popularity with the public is also evident, and she will take on a larger public profile in a new-look monarchy of King Charles.”
